Renovated K-Citymarket Joensuu Pilkko
The K-Citymarket in Pilkko, Joensuu (Finland), has been completely renewed and expanded. The modernization involved replacing technical installations, the shop interior, and back-of-house areas. The refrigeration system was also replaced with a more energy-efficient CO₂ system, which significantly reduces the building’s carbon footprint.
The challenge with the new construction was to retain the characteristic orange tiled façade of the existing building. Steni Finland commissioned M2uur bv to digitally reproduce these tiles. Using scripting, M2uur bv developed several variants and color tones, which were assessed on-site using a mock-up.
The final design resulted in a single seamless print applied in a repeating pattern across the new façade. The panels resemble the appearance of ceramic tiles, but are lighter, quicker to install, low-maintenance and more durable in use.
This solution also prevents recurring problems associated with traditional tile finishes, such as tiles coming loose due to movement, moisture or ageing. By applying the tile pattern to sheet material, the appearance is retained without the technical risks and maintenance costs of real tiles.
