First pile driven for unique Electrical Substation

On Tuesday, February 4, the first pile was driven for Liander’s new electric transformer building on Industrieweg in Katwijk, The Netherlands.

The building, designed by Kokon architects, will have a unique façade incorporating archaeological finds, including Roman pottery and a cloak pin.

The colours used symbolise the different layers of the Earth. The architect wanted to execute the work using 3D-cut and glued materials, which proved too complex and risky. Therefore, M2uur bv proposed digitally editing the 2D designs to create a 3D look.

M2uur bv developed several designs and various samples, one of which was developed into the final façade design. Currently, 162 panels are being produced, forming 27 façade sections measuring 200 x 600 cm each. The completion of this unique building is scheduled for the end of 2025.
